Today marks my first Ostomy Awareness Day. I’m walking a Virtual 5k (or close to it!) with the United Ostomy Association of America.
To be honest, I really had no idea what ostomies involved until it was time for my surgery to remove my colon. I have an ileostomy which means waste is diverted from its usual path through my small intestine instead. I have a stoma, which I liken to Rudolph’s red nose. This is where the waste comes out and I have a pouch system that holds the waste. I have to empty it each time I use the bathroom. Whew! My ostomy is permanent while some have a temporary one.
My ostomy has truly saved my life. I was so sick before my surgery and feel like I have a new lease on life now! I’m so grateful for all the support I’ve received from family and friends.
My book about my ulcerative colitis experience is available now on Amazon! I truly hope this can help others who are going through a similar experience. I want to show you that it’s ok to laugh about this disease. Humor can get you through this. I hope my poems and illustrations can give you a good laugh.
My book is available in eBook & Paperback. Feel free to leave an honest review (they are so helpful to other readers!) and contact me with any questions or comments you may have.
I will be posting some excerpts from my book on my Facebook Page today, along with some information about ostomies. Follow along today!
